How to bake a potato

I tried this method from Good Eats, and it didn't turn out quite right, but it was still a thousand times tastier than any other baked potato I've had. It's like mashed potatoes in a yummy crispy shell... yum.

It's like hard boiling an egg. There's the method most people do by themselves, and then there's the "right" way. Kinda gotta overcome what you're used to, not to mention put up with the longer wait cooking time, but it makes for so much yummier food.

Thin Mint Recipe - homemade and all-natural

Chocolate Wafters:
8 ounces organic butter, room temperature
1 cup organic powdered sugar, (I use Wholesome Sweeteners brand)
1 teaspoon natural vanilla extract
1 cup cocoa powder (I use Dagoba's cacao powder)
3/4 teaspoon fine grain sea salt
1 1/2 cups whole wheat pastry flour

Chocolate Peppermint Coating:
1 pound good quality semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
1/4 teaspoon plus a couple drops of natural peppermint extract (I use Flavorganics brand, avail. at Whole Foods)

Preheat your oven to 350. Racks in the middle zone.

Make the cookie dough: In a mixer cream the butter until it is light and fluffy. Add the powdered sugar and cream some more, scraping the sides of the bowl a couple times if necessary. Stir in the vanilla extract and then the salt and cocoa powder. Mix until the cocoa powder is integrated and the batter is smooth and creamy, sort of like a thick frosting. Add the whole wheat pastry flour and mix just until the batter is no longer dusty looking, it might still be a bit crumbly, and that's o.k. You don't want to over mix and end up with tough cookies.

Turn the dough out onto a counter, gather it into a ball, and kneed it just once or twice to bring it together into once nice, smooth mass. Place the ball of dough into a large plastic bag and flatten it into a disk roughly 3/4-inch thick. Place the dough in the freezer for 20 minutes to chill.

Rollout and bake: Remove the dough from the freezer and roll it out really thin, remember how thin Thin Mints are? That's how thin you need your dough, about 1/8-inch. You can either roll it out between two sheets of plastic, or dust your counter and rolling pin with a bit of flour and do it that way. Stamp out cookies using a 1 1/2-inch cutter (this time I used one with a fluted edge, I've done hearts and other shapes in the past). Place cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a baking rack if you've got one.

Make the peppermint coating:
While the cookies are in the oven you can get the coating ready. I use a makeshift double boiler to melt chocolate (a metal pan over a saucepan of gently simmering water), but I know many people who swear by melting chocolate in the microwave. Slowly melt the chocolate, stirring occasionally until it is glossy and smooth. Stir in the peppermint extract. If you think the chocolate needs a bit more peppermint kick, add more extract a drop or two at a time - but don't go overboard.

Finishing the cookies: You are going to coat the cookies one at a time and then gently set them on a parchment-lined baking sheet to set. Drop one cookie into the chocolate and (using a fork) carefully make sure it gets fully coated. Lift the cookie out of the chocolate with the fork and bang the fork on the side of the pan to drain any extra chocolate off the cookie. You are after a thin, even coating of chocolate. Place on the aforementioned prepared baking sheet, and repeat for the rest of the cookies. Place the cookies in the refrigerator or freezer to set. They will set at room temperature, it just takes much longer, and I prefer them straight out of the freezer anyways ;)

Make 3 or 4 dozen cookies.

So I'm watching the Today Show yesterday, minding my own business, not really paying attention because who really pays attention to Matt and Katie, when suddenly my senses are hit by this extraordinary sound. It was a deeply jazzy song but with the lightness of the Ditty Bops. A song called Extraordinary Machine, by Fiona Apple. Never knew I liked her but from the first note of the song I decided I did. There's just something that I really love about this song... In the middle of her second song on the set, I ran out to buy the CD. It was that quick. Really really great CD if you can even remotely stand jazz (and even if you can't, give it a try, might be surprised). Right now this album is being beaten out by Mariah Carey in Entertainment Weekly's awards... EWE!!!! If you care to, get over there and vote. Maybe at least the Grammys will have some taste...

'Serenity': Finally I can have my life back

At long last Joss Whedon's "Serenity" -- the science-fiction-slash-western movie based on his canceled TV show "Firefly" -- is premiering nationwide this week.

It's about time. I'm exhausted.

You could say I'm a fan of this fictional, multicultural universe of shepherds, gunfights, spaceships and whores. I'm active in the online forums. There are "Serenity" stickers on my car, action figures on my desk, and "Serenity" wallpaper on my computer. I curse in Chinese. I've had the theme song stuck in my head for three years. And I can't seem to stop myself from turning every conversation, no matter what, into a "Firefly" roundtable and trivia contest in under ten words.

"Agh, I spilled my ice. Ha! Remember that funny thing River said in 'Out of Gas' about freezing to death? I'll recite the entire episode from the beginning, to put it in context."

"Yes sir, I'll have those gorram reports on your desk in an hour, dong ma?"

"Just lie still, ma'am, the ambulance is on its way. Got your ident card ready? Right? See, the Alliance wasn't going to help save Shepherd Book after he'd been shot during the gunfight between Mal's clients and the lawmen while Simon was watching River dance after getting the cows off the spaceship, right, but when they saw his ident card . . . wake up, ma'am, this was a great scene."

I'd worry about alienating my family but they're almost as caught up in this as I am. Oh, and 55,000 or so friends and I have been acting as unpaid full-time marketing staff for the last nine months to promote the movie. So I've been keeping busy.

What distinguishes a fan from someone who just likes stuff? Is it when you start quoting lines over and over until co-workers want to beat you to death with staplers? Is it when you want to grab every person you meet by the hair to tell them about it?

Whatever it is, a lot of people crossed that line in 2002 when the new show by Joss Whedon (creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel") debuted. Set 500 years in the future, "Firefly" is the story of nine renegades on a rustbucket Firefly-class spaceship called Serenity. No galaxy-sweeping events, no mighty space battles or alien encounters, just ordinary people making a sometimes-legal living.

The stars were mostly unknowns: Nathan Fillion (Capt. Malcolm Reynolds), Sean Maher (Simon, ship's doctor), Adam Baldwin (Jayne, mercenary and thug), Gina Torres (Zoe, second-in-command), Alan Tudyk (Wash, pilot and Zoe's husband), Jewel Staite (Kaylee, sweet-as-pie mechanic), Morena Baccarin (Inara, respected courtesan), Summer Glau (River, Simon's sister and escaped fugitive) and Ron Glass (Shepherd Book, religious leader and mystery).

"Firefly" was smart and funny and dark and emotional and no one was on a Council or in a Federation and actions always had consequences, so naturally it was stomped on before that kind of thing could spread. FOX aired "Firefly" out of order, without much advertising, pre-empted it repeatedly, and finally canceled it after 11 episodes.

But it was too late. We felt cheated, and we wanted more. We mobilized.

We made Web sites and held shindigs. We demanded DVDs and bought them and watched them incessantly and gave them away and bought them again, and we made more fans.

Universal was already interested in a movie when the DVD sales went ballistic, largely because Whedon was the biggest fan of them all and he was determined to get the story told. The studio was also smart enough to realize that when you have a great movie without big-name stars or a one-line plot, the best thing to do would be to show it to people who will love it, give them unheard of access and support, and let word of mouth take over.

When hints of the advance screenings for fans arose we crawled over Fandango like maddened fire ants, hunting for the theaters before the official announcements were made and buying them out in hours -- sometimes minutes -- all three times. And then we went out and walked the land.

We spread the word. We wrote to magazines and entertainment sites. We made our own merchandise. We wrote songs, drew pictures, made costumes, and committed fan fiction. We congregated on forums and swapped stories and trivia and news and sightings and photos. We posted reviews wherever we could. We bought the comics and the books and the role-playing game and the action figures and the soundtracks as soon as they were available to prove that we wanted more now, please. (What's the opposite of a boycott? A girlcott?)

Ultimately we just wanted to make sure that this time people knew this thing we love is out there.

And now all of our hard work has paid off (also, I think Whedon and the cast and crew probably did something, too), and our time is here. All of our big damn heroes are back, better and funnier and more heart-breaking than ever, and now I can go see "Serenity" thirty or forty times and sing along with the other people in line and then relax and take down the posters and maybe even stop checking the movie Web site every twenty minutes. Finally I can start to obsess on something else.

Except . . .

There might be a sequel.

Hmm.

The hair, make-up, everything. I pride myself in never having gone googly over the young women of firefly as far as pure superficial hotness... but wow, that girl is fine...

Nathan Fillion: His awsomeness comes from his personality... and that's strong enough that given the chance, I... in all my utter heterosexuality... would "tap that"

David Krumholtz: Looks a little stoned, but maybe he's just really excited.

Jewell Stait: I love the girls and she's looking gorgeous as ever... but what the hell happened with that dress? Saying it makes her butt look fat is an understatement, it makes everything below her waist look like one wild, reality warping ass... But with a lovely floral tone...

Morena Baccarin: Well, what can I say about the most beautiful woman in the known universe? Sexy in a Morena way, not an Inara way, and that's nice... and a velvet slinky dress? Bestill my heart!

Nectar whatever (The lovebot): So in her interviews.... What the hell is she on? I mean when you do an interview you should have some semblance of... my god those are huge knockers...

Fanty and Mingo (just easier to call them that): In their interview they were very cool, their pictures alone... I'm sure the ladies will dig it. Honestly, suits are very easy to look good in, all it's gotta do is fit. The pressure is on the women when it comes to outfits. Unfair, but being a guy, just easier that way.

Ron Glass: Studly as ever, and very cool. Everyone else is stressing out about the whole thing, he's just taking it all in and enjoying it.

News: 'Goblet of Fire' trailer in multiple formats

It's a good sign when a trailer can effect me this way. Goblet of Fire is the turning point of the series, and takes you to new places that you never thought possible in the world... well, unless you've read the books like EVERYONE... I worry that the trailer gives away to much, but then I think, "is there anyone in the WORLD who doesn't already know what happens?" Looks hard core and does a great job with my favorite scenes, lets just see if the movie can stand alone as a major film and not just a visual adaptation of a world famous book. It's gonna be hard, not a job I'd want, but I'm gonna be investing my hard earned money in it as well as my emotional commitment (I love Goblet of Fire, don't want to see it done wrong), it better satisfy me.

It's kinda cool, free scifi audiobooks. Not exactly uber-fancy and the books aren't exactly A-list, but why complain? It's the dawn of the Podcasting world people. Embrace it. Blogs weren't good enough, everyone's doing radio shows now. My favorite? The Signal, which is now #1 on www.podcastalley.com and www.podcastpickle.com. Second favorite? What a coincidence, Slice of Scifi (done locally) which is ranked #2 everywhere. It's very professionally done, without the crap and arrogance of real radio hosts.

THE JOKE (tell this to all you're friends to aleviate the hurt)

So there's a spelling bee going on in a classroom. One by one the kids go up and recite a new word they learned how to spell the night before.

MIKEY: perfect, P-E-R-F-E-C-T, perfect.
TEACHER: very good Mikey. next.
ALICE: television, T-E-L-E-V-I-S-H-O-N, television.
TEACHER: Ohp, almost....
ALICE: S-I-O-N?
The teacher nods.
ALICE: T-E-L-E-V-I-S-I-O-N, television.
TEACHER: excellent. next.

Ricky walks to the front of the class. Very nervouse. He's a small, timid boy and not at all comfortable with public speeking, let alone in front of his classmates.

RICKY: peanut butter, P-E-A-N-U-T B-U-T-T-E-R, peanut butter!

There's a dead silence in the class. Every student stares at rickey with shock. the room has become a cemetary of horrified eyes peering terror into Ricky's heart. The teacher stands like a drill sergant and charges towards the boy, screaming at him "WHAT DID YOU SAY?!!! WHAT DID YOU SAY?!!!"

She grabs his arm with more force than her thin arms would seem to imply they had and drags him out of the class. The other children rush to the door to watch as Ricky is dragged down the hall, around the corner, and out of site.

A door swings open and Ricky is thrown into the principles and forced into a seat.

TEACHER: Ricky...you can tell the principal why you're here! I can't even
look at you right now.

She leaves, just as principal Ghetty walks in from his office.

GHETTY: why Billy-
RICKY: Ricky sir.
GHETTY: Whatever. Ricky, what are you doing here?

The boy goes to speak, a little unsure of what to say.

GHETTY: well, you're not in trouble are you? I'd find that hard to believe.
RICKY: I think I am sir.
GHETTY: well son, what is it you did that leads you to believe this?
RICKY: (still shooken up) well, I'm really not sure excactly. We were
having this spelling bee in class today and I went up and spelled the word
"peanut butter" and --
GHETTY: YOU DID WHAAAT!!!!!
RICKY: I...I...
GHETTY: SHUT YOUR MOUTH BOY!

Principal Ghetty jumps out of his chair and starts waving his arms around in outright anger and a seeming frustration...like he's loosing a hopeless battle. Ricky tries to speak, to question the situation, but Ghetty stunts him.

GHETTY: (trying to be calm) you just sit there and don't say a word. I'll be
back in a moment.

He goes back into his office. Ricky sits, dumbfounded, uneasy. He can feel the eyes on him. The secretary stares in disgust.

RICKY: what is it?

The secretary picks up a small used eraser chunk and lobs it at him, hitting him square in the forehead.

RICKY: OW!! what was that --

Just then the principal storms out of his office and grabs the boy much like the teacher. He drags him out of the room into the hall and towards the front entrance of the school.

GHETTY: I just finished speaking with your mother and she IS NOT imprissed Billy!
RICKY: Ricky.
GHETTY: WHATEVER! The point is you're to go home RIGHT NOW! Now
get out of my school!

And with that he tosses him out the door. Stunned but relieved to be out of Ghetty's grip, Ricky picks him self up and dust himself off. But now it's setting in. He has to tell his mom. Normally she's a sweet and forgiving angel....but when you cross her, that's when personallity 2 takes over. It's not pretty. But even worse will be when she tells DAD. Built like a brick shit house and he ain't no gental giant. It starts to dawn on him. "how did those two ever get together in the first place. They're so different from eachother". It doesn't matter. He's stalling and he knows it.

And so he makes for his journey home. What is already a 2 hour walk is being elongated by Billy's...err...Ricky's slow, baby like paces.

As he reaches the halfway point in his trip a squad car pulls up beside him. The policeman parks and exits the vehicle and strides over towards Ricky. The boy stops and, gaurded, watches the copper getting closer. He takes off his helmet (why he's wearing a helmet is anyone's guess) and removes his sunglasses. His face is friendly and bright, the way a hero ought to look. He kneels to Ricky's eye level.

COP: y'know, I do believe it's a school day son. Mickey Mouse's arm is only pointing to the 2 on my watch....shouldn't you be in class right now?
RICKY: I got sent home.
COP: Really? You look like a good lad. What could they have sent you home for?
RICKY: you wouldn't believe me if I told you.
COP: (all smiles) Try me.

Ricky looks at him hesitantly. He doesn't want to say it, but he needs an answer as to why.

RICKY: well.....okay, I guess. Let me ask you something first. Does the word "peanut butter" have any kind of significant value that you're aware of....cause I ---

The cop jumps back. His expression goes insanely dark as he whips out his Billy club. Ricky goes stiff...horrified.

And the cop goes for it. He starts on Ricky, unforgivingly beating the poor child with his club. Not hard enough to brake anything...just enough to let him know that this cop doesn't take any shit. The man picks Ricky up and tosses him into the back seat of the squad car, slams the door shut and drives off.

At the police station Ricky is thrown into a cell. He knows that he's not going to have a good time here. He has been told that his parents know of his arrest and thought that it might be best to teach their son a lesson. In addition to this the chief had explained that all the other inmates where made aware of Ricky's deviant actions. "If you know what's good for you son, you'll keep to yourself and avoid opening that blasphemous mouth of yours"

20 YEARS PASS

Ricky, weathered and beaten is finally on his final hours of imprisonment. He has waited for this day...and yet....he's unsure. What is he going to do in the world? He's lost all his friends, his family. He's been in jail most of his life. No job, no home. What does he have on the outside world? "Will I even recognize it?" he ponders.

Regardless, he's happy. A new start...time to put all this madness behind him.

8:32 am. His cell door opens and he takes his first steps towards freedom. Outside the air is like a sweet nector. He can feel a sense of life rushing back to him.

As he walks around taking in the brave new world around him, he comes to an intersection. The light is red and so he waits.

A tapping on his shoulder grabs his attention.

ALICE: Ricky? Ricky, oh my God, is that you?!

He turns to see his old school crush.

RICKY: Alice?
ALICE: yea..Hi, wow...how are you?
RICKY: Um..fine I guess...jeeze how'd you know it was me?
ALICE: I remember your face. I've been thinking about it for 20 years.
RICKY: (a little bashfull) yea?
ALICE: yea. It was really unfair what they did to you in that class. Come
to think of it....that was the last time any of us saw you. What happened?
RICKY: it's a LOOONG and weird story.
ALICE: well I have somewhere to be right now but, why don't you tell it
to me over dinner. Say 8:00?
RICKY: yea...that's sounds nice.
ALICE: OK then, well, we'll talk then. I gotta go this way. Bye.
RICKY: BYE.

He watches as she heads off down the street. A smile creeps over his face as he goes to cross the opposite street.

SLAM!!!

Just as he steps out a massive MAC truck comes barreling through and slams him with it's grill. Ricky dies instantly.

the moral of the story is: LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE CROSSING THE STREET!

Won't matter much to the one person who actually reads this... or anyone else who might read this either... Well, still think this is worthy linkage. Basically, one of TechTV's few good shows originally was Screen Savers, a pretty simple call in show for tech advice and nerdy type stuff. When G4 bought out TechTV, it slowly turned into a crappy borderline tabloid show. Still some redeeming points, but Kevin Perera is an ass. Anyway, now it seems the guy who started Screen Savers in the first place is returning to do a show along the lines of the original. It's a good thing for the nerds out there, and some of us geeks.

Freaky... this was leaked onto the interweb into a file sharing network. Simple, low budget, creepy as hell. Oddest part is it seems undeniable that it's Summer Glau herself starring in it. It seems to be a mystery who leaked it, but is it a clever marketing scheme to just slip a promotion out without any notice and see where it goes, or is this a cleverly made fan film? It's brand new so we're only seeing the beginning of this, but it's a really wild new... something. Watch it!

Just dropping by to say 'hey', maybe throw out a few behind-the-scenes tidbits to make you feel all special and tingly. Okay I can't sleep. But I still might have a tidbit, we'll see.

The marketing blitz is poised to begin. Hopefully it will be a blitz and not a tiny police action. Marketing is a very tricky business, as I've learned. Coming up with the tagline, "The Future is Worth Fighting For", was not a simple process. A couple of close contenders:

"The Future is worth Running Away From."

"The Future is All Visual and S---."

"One Captain. One Psychic. One Assasin. One Doctor. One Shepherd. Another Assasin, but different from the first. One Mechanic. One Companion, which is like a geisha or a courtesan, I guess sort of. One... um... did I do Mechanic? Which movie is this?"

"If you loved Katerina Witt in 'Carmen on Ice', you'll love this."

"Mal Takes His Shirt Off Already."

"Serenity. It's like art, but in movie form."

"Get Ready For Rush Hour."

Now, clearly all good notions, but each lacking that one crucial element. I think we went the right way.

Gettin' ready fro my trip to Edinburgh. Just one burning question: Is Sargent's "Lady Agnew of Lochnaw" still hanging in the National Gallery? I'm excited about the film and all, but... if anyone in Scottishville can get me the 411 (that's American slang for "four one one"), I'd be grateful. I loves me some Lady Agnew.

Oh, and come early September, I'll be making another short jaunt -- and finally get to hang with my Aussie peeps! I'm hitting Sydney and Melbourne! Not for more than a day each, but it's still my first time and I'm psyched! (See, I told you ther'd be some info if you hung around long enough.) I expect a proper Australian welcome, unless a proper Australian welcome involves paddling of any kind.

Well, back to attempt sleep. Keep fighting, and ignore Movieline and the Hollywood Stock Exchange. We make our destiny, peeps. you all know that better than anyone.

Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.: Refering to Undeclared: "It was masterminded by comedy genius Judd Apatow. Apatow wrote for 'The Larry Sanders Show', then went on to mastermind 'Freaks and Geeks', produce “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” and finally write and direct “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” one of the two funniest movies I’ve seen this year."

What does this mean? It means I gotta go see The 40 Year Old Virgin. I don't want to, it looks like a crappy gross out comedy for grown ups (as opposed to gross out comedies for teenage morons). But, the main guy is pretty funny... I'll give it a try, just for the sake of Freaks and Geeks.

Joss Whedon is a big crazy fan of Veronica Mars. Yeah it's a good show, but the creator of Buffy AND Firefly and the source of an entire school of television writing philosophy that has changed a great deal of my life this past year or two claiming that Veronica Mars is the "Best. Show. Ever."? I've been watching the show loyally, very upset about it going up against Lost (a death sentence), and season 1 is already on my netflix queue (and I'll probaby go ahead and buy the set at some point), but that's just wacky. Good call on the Veronica Mars Jenn... (cause you're the only one that reads this anyway.)

This is my attempt at posting my own thread. My peeps and I just finished a crazed Veronica Marsathon, and I can no longer restrain myself. Best. Show. Ever. Seriously, I've never gotten more wrapped up in a show I wasn't making, and maybe even more than those. Crazy crisp dialogue. Incredibly tight plotting. Big emotion, I mean BIG, and charsimatic actors and I was just DYING from the mystery and the relationships and PAIN, this show knows from pain and no, I don't care, laugh all you want, I had to share this. These guys know what they're doing on a level that intimidates me. It's the Harry Potter of shows. There. I said it. People should do whatever they can to check out this first season so the second won't be a spoiler fest. I'm nutty.

I'm a little calmer now. Oh God, no I'm not! Wait. Wait. Okay. Some of you may already be all up on this, and some may disagree, but I'm urging peeps to check it out, 'cause there is great TV afoot, and who doesn't want that? Thank you for your time.

Schreibman, producers of PARTS: THE CLONUS HORROR (seen in episode 811) filed suit in New York claiming DreamWorks and Warner Bros. cribbed their movie for The Island. In addition to unspecified financial compensation, Fiveson and Schreibman want The Island withdrawn from theaters and any further release barred, reports Daily Variety.

The copyright infringement suit lists 90 instances where the movies are identical. DreamWorks released a statement Tuesday saying, ''The Island' does not infringe on anyone's copyrights.' Warner said it does not comment on pending litigation."
